No more 99 cent shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate. I certaintly don't mind paying $1.99 as that is still very much worth the price. What bothered me was I bought $14 worth of food myself, and brought 5 other patrons there with me to eat, and they would not give or even sell me an ice water. Their profit on the bottle of Pepsi water will in no way make up for the lost profits by me no longer taking my tour groups there reguarly.

I'm a local. I stay downtown a lot for fun and to share with friends. The nickel slots at Fitzgerald's are very loose if you play max coins. You do receive lots of comps for play - say about $400 a trip - and you get free rooms, free play, meals and more. The only drawbacks are some of the older hotels have not upgraded theirbeds. I refuse to stay in comp rooms at the Plaza, California Club or Fitzgerald's because the old-or-cheap mattresses make me hurt all over after just a couple nights. Also one stay at the Fitzgerald's was a nightmare because the elevators were not working, and we were on the 11th floor. I'm diabetic and they refused to allow us to use the service elevator. We were stuck upstairs for three hours.

Golden Gate shrimp cocktail has gone up in price since the beginning of the year... Total bummer (but still a great treat).

For a couple of Texans who always stay downtown it was an excellent article. A big factor you did not mention is one of the big reasons we have stayed at the Fremont Hotel for the past 15 years or so. It is the tremendous warmth and friendliness shown by ALL the folks who work in the Fremont. We are always greeted by big hugs from the ladies or huge handshakes from the men employees and many of them call us by name. We feel we ARE a part of the "Fremont family" and even though we are in our mid-eighties we look forward to many more visits to the super friendly Fremont.
